Cheap, HD camcorder, quality: these aren't words that normally go hand in hand, especially given the proliferation of pocket-sized camcorders like the. But Toshiba is trying to tick all these boxes with the Camileo H30, a cheap, full-HD camcorder that comes in under AU$400. Design and features The H30 is a slight and compact camcorder that fits well in a small hand. It's so light in fact that it could easily fit into a pocket and so small that it almost encroaches on the Bloggie/Flip territory with its petite stature. That said, the H30 feels like it is built to a price, and the AU$399 tag shows in its plastic construction. There are a lot of things this camcorder does well for the price though, the first of which is full HD video recording at 1080p, and packing a 5x optical zoom in the front lens. The 3-inch touchscreen flips out from the camera body, which conceals only two buttons; power and pre-record/instant upload to YouTube.
When pressed, the pre-record function (only available when the camcorder is not connected to a computer) grabs the preceding three seconds of footage before the record button is pressed. There's precious little else in terms of external features: just a zoom rocker at the top; a record button flanked by a rotating control wheel; and buttons to switch between playback, stills and video recording.
The H30 has a 10-megapixel sensor inside which it uses to take still images. This can be upped to 16 megapixels using interpolation. A remote control, HDMI and USB 2.0 cables are provided in the box; not surprisingly, connectivity is provided via mini-HDMI, USB or AV out.
Supplied software with the H30 includes ArcSoft Connect, a tool for transferring to YouTube, and Media Impression 2. The H30 encodes in H.264 in AVI format.
While the touchscreen is a nice addition to help cut down on physical buttons, it doesn't actually let you change any shooting parameters on the fly; just change settings in the menus like white balance, scene mode, self-timer, macro or ISO (800 or 1600). The TFT screen is fairly low resolution, becoming pretty obvious when shooting in low light. Performance and image quality The HS30 is helped and hindered by its price tag. While it's a little bit more than pocket-sized HD camcorders, it delivers slightly better image quality and comes with an optical zoom. At the same time, spend a little bit more and get a more fully-featured camcorder with manual shooting and a better screen. Galanz Ac Unit Manual on this page.
